The 16th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK 2011) got off to a colourful start here this evening with Chief Minister Oommen Chandy declaring the event open in the presence of eminent film personalities and cultural leaders.
Bollywood actress Jaya Bachchan was the chief guest in the inaugural function held at the Nishagandhi Open air auditorium at Kanakakkunnu Palace.Minister of Forest, Wildlife, Sports and Cinema, K B Ganesh Kumar presided over the function. Minister for Culture, Planning and Rural Development K C Joseph released the festival catalogue and the festival bulletin was released by Shashi Tharoor MP by handing over to Minister for Transport and Devaswom, V S Sivakumar
Distinguished and versatile actor Om Puri, actress Sukumari and Australian film-maker Bruce Beresford were special guests. Cultural Secretary Sajan Peter, Kerala State Chalachitra Academy Chairman and festival director Priyadarshan, Vice-chairman Gandhimathi Balan, festival deputy director Bina Paul Venugopal, Kerala Film Chamber President B Sasikumar, FEFCA President B Unnikrishnan and MACTA Chairman Harikumar were also present at the inaugural function.
