Ramcharan's `Raksha' on April 5

Superstar and Chiranjeevi's son Ramcharan Teja's Raksha will hit the theatres on April 5. Dubbing works have been completed. The movie songs have already found a place in the hit list.

Director is Sampath Nandi and Raksha was shot at international locations spending Rs 30 crore. Tamanna will play the lead female role in the movie.

Manisha Koirala to make a comeback in Bollywood

Mumbai : Actress Manisha Koirala, best known for her performances in films like `Khamoshi', `1942: A Love Story', `Bombay' and `Dil Se', is set to make a sort of comeback in Bollywood after a brief break.

'I will talk about my films later. Because I don't know when the directors and producers are ready to make an
announcement. But there are three films whose script I have okayed. I am meeting two more directors, I am okaying those
scripts as well,' Manisha told reporters here last night.

'This year I will be working (on these films)... so next year would be a kind of comeback,' she said.

The 42-year-old Nepali-Indian actress made her acting debut in Bollywood with Subhash Ghai's `Saudagar' (1991),
which was a huge hit.

After years of success, she was later seen in several low-budget films like `Paisa Vasool' (2004), `Sirf' (2008) and
a few others, which were box office dud.

Recently, it was reported that Madhur Bhandarkar's much-awaited film `Heroine' is inspired by Manisha's life.
Bhandarkar has, however, denied such reports.

When asked Manisha about the same, she said, 'I hope he knows me well to make a movie on me.'

Manisha was here to see filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra's blockbuster `Parinda' (1989).

'He is one of the finest directors we have today. I was fortunate to work with him in `1942: A love Story',' the
award-winning actress said.

Discovery to telecast Ra One special effect

Shahrukh Khan's Ra One is one of the costliest films ever made in Bollywood. The film reportedly cost the makers more than Rs 125 crores to produce.

Unlike most other films, the Making of Ra One wasn't released before or after the film's release. Now, Discovery Channel will be telecasting the entire making of the film on 30th March 2012 at 8PM .

The making will include exclusive on-the-set footage, as well as never-before-seen details on the how the special effects of the film were done. The Red Chillies VFX department won a National Award for Ra One.

Shah Rukh visits injured animator Charu in hospital

Mumbai: Shah Rukh Khan Wednesday paid a visit to 'RA.One' animator Charu Khandal at the Kokilaben Ambani hospital where she is battling for her life after an accident.

Actor-producer Shah Rukh Khan, who was busy shooting in London for Yash Raj's next untitled film, landed here Tuesday. He came to visit Charu at the hospital and also met her family members.

He spent around 35 to 40 minutes in the hospital, but didn't speak to the press waiting outside.

Charu met with an accident March 25. A speeding car, with an allegedly drunk driver at the wheel, rammed into the autorickshaw in which she was travelling with her sister and a friend.

The 26-year-old suffered multiple fractures and injuries to her spinal cord in the accident early Sunday.

DiCaprio embarrassed by 'Titanic' performance

London: Actor Leonardo DiCaprio was embarrassed when he recently revisited his 1997 blockbuster 'Titanic'.Director James Cameron and DiCaprio's co-star Kate Winslet Tuesday attended the premiere of the new 3D version of the film here.

DiCaprio never made it to the red carpet, but Cameron revealed his former leading man was left red-faced when he recently re-watched the film.

'I wish Leo could be here but he's shooting a film. It would have been great for Leo to be here, to be part of the celebrations. I didn't show him the whole film but I showed him 18 minutes of it a few months ago. It was a good reunion for us but great to watch his reaction. He couldn't believe it. He said to me, 'I'm such a young punk. Look at me.' He was practically crawling under the seat. It was a good moment,' dailystar.co.uk quoted Cameron as saying.

Kareena to do item number in 'Heroine'

Mumbai: Actress Kareena Kapoor, who has lately been doing many item numbers in Bollywood, is gearing up for her next item song in Madhur Bhandarkar's 'Heroine'.

'We have a new item song called 'Halkat Jawani' which is a wonderful song that will be picturised on Kareena Kapoor. I am sure the audiences will love this song. This film 'Heroine' will be a different sort of film for Kareena Kapoor,' Bhandarkar told IANS.

Directed by Bhandarkar, the film has Kareena and Arjun Rampal in the lead.

The director says 40 percent of the shooting has been done.

'Forty percent of the film has been finished. From (April) 10th, we will again have a nonstop shooting and by September the film will be released,' he said.

Bhandarkar also sought to deny speculation that the film is based on Manisha Koirala's life.

'This film is not based on Manisha Koirala. It is absolutely wrong. Lot of things had been written about the film before. I have created a character called Mahi Arora who is today's girl. The film is all about how she witnesses the ups and downs in her life,' he said.

Yet to decide Esha's wedding date: Hema Malini

Mumbai: After Esha Deol's engagement with businessman beau Bharat Takhtani, everyone is eagerly waiting to hear about her D-day. But her mother and veteran actress Hema Malini says they have yet to decided the wedding date.

According to a recent tabloid report, Esha and Bharat are planning to exchange the wedding vows in July, but Hema told IANS: 'Wedding dates are not yet confirmed. I know a tabloid has published the wedding dates for May or July. I would like to stay mum on this matter. Whenever the dates, printings are done, we will make an official announcement.'

Esha got engaged to Bharat Feb 12 in a private ceremony at her Juhu home.

Daughter of Hema and Dharmendra, Esha began her tryst with Bollywood in 2002 with 'Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe'. She went on to feature in films like 'Chura Liyaa Hai Tumne', 'Na Tum Jaano Na Hum' and 'Dhoom'.

Last year, Hema tried to resurrect her 29-year-old daughter's movie career with 'Tell Me O Kkhuda', but it failed to strike a chord with the audiences.

'Agent Vinod': Bollywood espionage genre comes of age

Film: 'Agent Vinod'; Starring: Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor

Directed by: Sriram Raghavan; Rating: *** 1/2

Believe me, it's really a small world.Even though a film purporting to be as epic in proportion as 'Agent Vinod' travels all across the world to capture some of the most never-seen spots in the world, the plot - an intelligent clever, urbane and wry melange of Bourne and Bond, 'Farz' and 'Mission Impossible', finally finds its most assured resting-place in apana jahaan Delhi.

The last half hour where an international terrorist outfit attempts to blow up Delhi, gets the grammar of an espionage thriller so riveting and so right, you wonder what took director Sriram Raghavan so long to get there.

'Agent Vinod' is the kind of meticulously crafted spy drama where cerebral considerations mesh into more earthy demands of commercial Hindi cinema, like item songs in smoky bars, shootouts in dust toasted-brown locations that are as treacherous as they are daunting and, wonder of wonders, a clumsily-choreographed Mujra which doesn't quite fit into the smooth storytelling.

Smitten more than we can eschew.

From its opening in a Taliban-infested area, there is no dearth of intrigue in 'Agent Vinod'. Agents, counter-agents, moles and molls, open-air flea markets and shopping malls jostle for attention in a script that appears to know its John le Carrre as well as its Nick Carter.

Raghavan spins a delicious yarn of guns and growls, but blessedly no gadgets. The action is crackling. The soundtrack is a chirpy mix of cheesy retro (RD and Asha Bhosle 'Meri jaan tune kaha' from the film 'The Train' pops up unannounced) and contemporary techno sounds.

The plot, perched precariously on the brink of self-indulgence, never spins out of control.

Clearly Sriram and Saif adore the spy genre. We can see the fun they've had in doing this film. But beneath the boys-having-fun mood is an undertone of reverence for all the espionage films from our own 'Agent Vinod' in 1977 to Hollywood's Mission Impossible series.

Holding the restless plot in place is Saif's clenched and controlled performance. He desists from playing the spy to the galleries. He is urbane cool, yes. But he doesn't enjoy shooting the enemies for his country and really, patriotic jingoism is left far behind in the race to save civilisation from a nuclear catastrophe. There's a job to be done.And no room for fornication and fun.

Agent Vinod must be the only spy film from India where the Indian flag is not saluted or even mentioned in passing in hushed or shrill tones. This guy with a funny name would rather get along with the job .

Saif's performance is unfussy, no-nonsense and largely humourless. The end-title when he attempts to do a funny song seem so out of character, you wonder why the spy is trying so hard to be comical when we like him Martini-dry .

Ambling from one exotic location to another with the irradiant Kareena Kapoor in tow, Saif is a portrait of restrained heroism. He gets much-needed support from a cast of actors who seem to have been chosen without a second option. Every player knows his job and does it without looking distracted or self-important.

Raghavan's direction is deep-focussed on the inner world of people who live on the edge. There is no room for romance or emotions. In the only meaty sequence that she has, Kareena moves us to tears when she tells Saif she wants a normal girl's life. Significantly Saif eats as she weeps.

No, he isn't rude. Just honest. Life doesn't just go on. It goes on uncaring about those moments of tearful stock-taking which moviegoers would like to think of as the essence of life.

For all its sharply-defined interludes of counter-intelligence manoeuvres, 'Agent Vinod' tends to get long-winded, though miraculously the narrative never gets out of breath. On the contrary it takes our breath away towards the end when in a climactic bomb-defusion end-game that is reminiscent of Mani Shankar's '16 December'.

The globally-shot material is edited by Pooja Ladha Surti with more room for the narrative to sprawl and recline than necessary. Really, how much of the disconnected derring-do can we take before we throw our hands up in unresisting surrender?

The action sequences by Peter Heins and Parvez are sometimes heart-in-the-mouth. Other times they seem to have been put together on the editing table.

Life's like that. You are either swept away in circumstances beyond your control. Or you create situations that you choose to be swept away in.

'Agent Vinod' is not quite the overwhelming experience that you would want a global espionage thriller to be. More thoughtful than thundering, more la Carre and less Bond it nonetheless take the spy genre in Hindi to a new level of finesse. Finally, the cool quotient in Raghavan's chic spin on the espionage thriller is so high that you forget Bond and all his bloody brothers.

Saif imparts a dry devilish dispassion to his spy's part,. He doesn't get time to tell Kareena how much he loves her.

That's for the best. We already know that.

Rajesh Pillai's next movie titled `Gold'

After the smashing hit `Traffic', director Rajesh Pillai has announced his next project, a film titled `Gold.

'It's based on the lives of women athletes and their journey of struggles that often gets unnoticed,' says Rajesh Pillai.

The film has been scripted by Sankar Ramakrishnan, who wrote Urumi. Rajesh will direct the Bollywood version of the film too.

The grapevine has it that the director has finalized a Malayali heroine, who acted in a Tamil hit recently.

It is rumoured that Kunchacko Boban will be doing the main role in `Gold'.

`Beautiful' team to do `Trivandrum Lodge'

After the much successful `Beautiful', V K Prakash-Anoop Menon-Jayasuriya team will be joining hands again. The movie to be named `Trivandrum Lodge' will have almost all the cast and technical team of `Beautiful'.

Anoop Menon will be doing the script for the movie. Songs played a success mantra for Beautiful and hence Rathish Vega, who did the songs in Beautiful, will be the misic director for the new movie. Cinematography will be by Pradeep Nair and backstage works are progressing.

James Cameron dives to deepest point of ocean

Los Angeles: 'Titanic' and 'Avatar' director James Cameron succeeded in reaching the depth of the Mariana Trench Sunday, becoming the first person in the world to complete the feat in a solo dive.

Cameron, who is also an avid explorer, plumbed the depths of 'The Challenger Deep', a depth of 35,756 feet southwest of Guam in the Pacific Ocean, National Geographic said.

The director surfaced from the ocean at about 7 p.m., reported Xinhua.

'All systems OK,' Cameron, who is National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence, told the crew after reaching the lowest point on earth.

'Just arrived at the ocean's deepest pt,' he said in his Twitter account roughly an hour after reaching the lowest point of the ocean.

'Hitting bottom never felt so good. Can't wait to share what I'm seeing w/ you@DeepChallenge.'

The endeavour was achieved after seven years of preparation. Cameron, 57, travelled solo inside Deepsea Challenger, a torpedo-shaped specially crafted submersible that he helped to design.

Under Deepsea Challenge, a joint scientific expedition which partnered the director with National Geographic, Cameron was to spend up to six hours on the sea floor, collecting samples for scientific research and taking pictures and video of the famous trench. The director/explorer surfaced in 70 minutes which was considered faster than expected.

Cameron is the only person to ever complete the dive to the point in a solo vehicle, and the first since 1960 to do so in a manned submersible when the feat was completed by US Navy Lt. Don Walsh and Swiss oceanographer Jacques Piccard in the bathyscaphe Trieste.

'Avatar 2' not delayed as no release date fixed: Producer

Oscar-winning producer Jon Landau has rejected rumours about delay of 'Avatar 2', saying there is no question of delay as a date for its release was never set.

In India to oversee the 3D release of 'Titanic', Jon told IANS, ' 'Avatar 2' has not been delayed. We never set a date for it to delay it. We are in very early stages of pre-production and we want to put all the pieces together before we formally announce a date.'

Jon is James Cameron's partner in producing both 'Titanic' and 'Avatar'.

And like the first, the next two sequels of 'Avatar' will also push the technological frontiers of filmmaking and viewing. Both the films will be shot on an increased frame rate giving the audience a perceptible difference in quality of images.

Though Hollywood experimented with a faster frame rate in the 1970s, the technology could not gain traction.

'Things like higher frame rate have existed in the industry before, but using them meant converting all film projectors. Digital projectors however have no such issues and can run at a higher frame rate without changing anything,' he said.

As a strong proponent of 3D, Jon added: 'A film ultimately is about the story. But how you present the story and how you manage engagement from the audience is enhanced by the use of technology. 3D activates more of your mind and the brain has to work more to process the imagery you see leading to greater audience engagement.'

Many feel that despite large admission numbers, India is still a small market for Hollywood movies in terms of revenue. Jon however does not think so.

'I think India is an emerging market and will grow steadily. My coming here signifies that as an industry we acknowledge that. Secondly, I bring a message for the industry in the country asking them to use technology the right way.

'For example, a theatre may go for a cheaper 1.3K projector, but I'd ask them to go for the 2K ones because it has better quality and gives you a competitive edge and thus profits in the long run.'

He is enthusiastic about 'Titanic 3D' that has been restored at a cost of $18 million.

'We are treating and promoting it as a new film,' he said, before adding, 'We want to share the movie with a generation of moviegoers who have never seen it on the big screen and, for those who have seen it, 3D will enhance the dramatic story leading them to be more engaged with the characters in the movie than ever before.'

Jon is the son of film producer parents who made some landmark films in the 1960s and 1970s like 'Long Day's Journey Into Night' and Sidney Lumet's 'The Pawnbroker'.

Ironically, it was not easy convincing them to allow him to join the 'family business'.

'Knowing how hard producing films was, they wanted me to become a teacher or do computer science.'

How then did he become a producer? 'Like all kids, I rebelled,' he said with a laugh.

Having seen the film business up close, he is in a perfect position to comment on what's changed in the business.

'A lot has changed and we now have newer technologies to tell stories. Movie marketing has also changed drastically.'

Yet, before signing off he reiterates, 'Despite all these, a movie is still about the script and the story. And that is something that won't change forever.'

Celina Jaitly gives birth to twin boys

Actress Celina Jaitly became the proud mother of twin boys in Dubai Saturday.

'Yes our angels from heaven are here and we are very happy. Celina and the boys are doing very well healthwise too. We just want everyone to bless our handsome boys,' Celina's husband Peter Haag said in a statement.

They have already named their twins Winston and Viraaj.

Celina married hotelier Haag last year in July at a 1,000-year-old monastery in Austria. Ever since her wedding, she has been living in Dubai.

The new parents would visit Mumbai soon.

The former beauty queen made her Bollywood debut with 2003 film 'Janasheen' and was seen in films like 'No Entry', 'Zinda', 'Golmaal Returns', 'Thank You' and most recently 'Will You Marry Me?'.

Dhanush will take Bollywood by storm with 'Raanjhana':director

New Delhi: 'Tanu Weds Manu' director Aanand Rai, who has roped in 'Kolaveri Di' hitmaker Dhanush for his next film, says the film will break the myth that actors from South do not taste success in Bollywood. Having cast Dhanush opposite Sonam Kapoor in the film, Aanand says that the National award winning actor will take Bollywood by storm with 'Raanjhana'. 'We have so many girls from down South stepping into Hindi films but filmmakers seem to get cold feet when it comes to actors. Maybe 'Raanjhana' would break the myth that actors from South aren't successful in Hindi films. I have seen Dhanush's work down South, he will take Bollywood by storm,' Aanand told PTI.

After the success of 'Tanu Weds Manu', apparently there was pressure on Aanand to rope in a much more 'saleable' name.
But the director said, 'I don't understand one thing. When we have no qualms picking up films from down South for remaking
them in Bollywood, why not do the same with heroes as well?' Set in Varanasi, 'Raanjhana' is a love story of a middle
class boy and girl. Known for capturing the authenticity of various small towns and cities in 'Tanu Weds Manu', Aanand is expected to bring similar flavour in his new film as well, 'This is also going to be a close-to-soil film. Dhanush
is going to melt everyone's heart in the role of this loveable guy from Varanasi. The female character too would have a mind
of her own despite hailing from a small town. She is street- smart and not a pushover. Beyond that it would be futile to talk since it is too early,' said Aanand.

The director has been making rounds of the city, at times with Dhanush and at other times alone, to ensure that Dhanush understands the milieu well and also acclimatises himself with a quintes ential North Indian environment. 'Dhanush has already made the city as his own. He has understood the soul of the script and the spirit of the town. Now he is giving his heart into getting the character right. As for the body language, we will work on it together to ensure that he comes across as someone who is more Indian than being a South or a North India,' said Aanand. While his entire concentration is currently on
'Raanjhana', Aanand says that he had to let go of quite a few other tempting offers that came his way last year.

'Once you have a successful film, corporate houses do want to work with you. I am glad I am going through that stage
when there are proposals all around. However, I wish to make only one film at a time. Instead of immersing myself in
multiple projects and over committing myself, I would rather concentrate only on 'Raanjhana' and make sure that it is a good product.' Meanwhile there are plans to bring on the 'Tanu WedsManu' sequel. Though there has been contradictory information floating around, Aanand sets all doubts to rest. ''Tanu Weds Manu' sequel will most definitely get made.
Secondly, it would be with Madhavan and Kangna. I don't see anyone stepping into their shoes,' he said.

Mammooty to act in Ajay Vasudev's maiden film

Mega star Mammooty will be the hero in Ajay Vasudev's maiden venture. Ajay had earlier worked with Shafi, Jony Antony and Vaisakh. Under the banner of ACV Films, Vinod will be the producer and Udayakrishna-Siby K Thomas team will do sreenplay and acript writing.

Malayalam thespian Jose Prakash dead

The grand old man of Malayalam films Jose Prakash passed away Saturday afternoon at a private hospital here, family sources said.

Thespian Prakash, 86, will be remembered for his villainous roles in which he smoked a pipe and wore jackets – giving Malayalam films a touch of Hollywood, way back in the late seventies.

Incidentally, Prakash took up singing after voluntary retirement from the British Indian Army.

He formed the Kottayam Arts Club, which was basically a musical troupe and in 1953 he sang for the first time in the film ’Sheriyo Thetto.

It was in 1961 that he got his first break in the film Bhakta Kuchela and in 1969 he became the most sought after villain after his role in Olavum Theeravum.

There was no looking back for this veteran who has done nearly 400 films, including in Tamil. His last film wasTraffic that was released last year.




His co-actor in numerous films, veteran actress Sukumari said that with his passing away an era had come to a close.

"He was one who was gentle and respected everyone. Whatever role he was offered, he did with absolute dedication. May be his stint in the Army was his strength," said Sukumari.

Incidentally his passing away comes a day after the state government selected him for the prestigious J.C. Daniel Award on Friday in recognition for his overall contribution to the film world and theatre.

The funeral is expected to take place here on Monday.

Actor Jose Prakash passes away

Renowned Malayalam actor Jose Prakash, who gave a new face for villain roles, died here on Saturday.

He was 87.

Doctors at the private hospital, where Mr. Prakash was admitted on March 18, said that he had been suffering from multiple disorders. The end came at 2.30 p.m. following heart failure.

Mr. Prakash entered Malayalam cinema as a singer in 1953. He became a popular actor through the movie 'Bhaktha Kuchela'.

In his career spanning over six decades, Mr. Prakash had acted in over 300 films. 'Traffic', which was penned by his nephews Sanjay and Bobby, was his last movie.

The death came a day after the State government selected him for the coveted J. C. Daniel award for his valuable contributions to the film industry and theatre.

Jose Prakash gets J C Daniel Award

Thiruvananthapuram: Jose Prakash bagged the J C Daniel Award and the award carries Rs 1 lakh prize money and a certificate.

Minister Ganesh Kumar announced the award in a press meet here on Friday. The award was given considering his overall contribution to drama and cinema field.

Jose Prakash entered the cine field with his first movie `Seemanthaputhran' in 1926.

Asin wants to do only commercial movies

Mumbai: Southern actress Asin Thottumkal, who started her Bollywood journey with 'Ghajini', says she wants to focus only on commercial movies.

'Right now I am concentrating on commercial space. If in commercial space I get a good character, then I will cope up with that. But not deviating from commercial cinema because it reaches out to a larger audience,' Asin told IANS.

'I want to stay in the commercial space...within that space if I get a fleshy character. I would love to do it,' added the 26-year-old.

Her first Hindi film, Ghajini was a huge commercial success of 2008. However, her next release 'London Dreams' with Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn bombed at the box office.

In 2010 came 'Ready' in which she once again teamed up with Salman and it was huge hit.

Now Asin is looking forward to Sajid Khan's 'Housefull 2', her fourth Hindi film, coming out April 5.

Refuting reports that she is extra choosy, Asin said: 'I am not the one who is in a hurry to do a lot of things. I think I have my own taste something that I am comfortable with.

'I do things in my own way and not under pressure. I have been accused to be extra choosy and I don't take it into consideration.'

Vidya should avoid pitfall of doing central parts: Shabana

Mumbai: Shabana Azmi liked Vidya Balan's performance in 'Kahaani' so much that she could see glimpses of herself in her. At the same time, she feels the young actress should avoid the pitfall of accepting only central parts.

'Somewhere I feel Vidya has made the daring but right career choices. I see glimpses of my own involvement with my roles in Vidya Balan,' say Shabana appreciatively after watching Balan in' Kahaani'.

Shabana is currently playing a wily politician in Rajkot for Vishal Bhardwaj's 'Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola'. She took time off from her shooting to watch Sujoy Ghosh's masterpiece that is still going houseful.

'I had to watch 'Kahaani' because of Vidya. I was bowled over by her performance. As an actor, I could see she was making all the right moves throughout the film. There was not a single artificial note in her performance,' said Shabana, known for powerful performances in 'Arth', 'Masoom', 'Fire' and 'Godmother'.

But Shabana sounds a note of caution in the euphoria surrounding Vidya's rise to the top.

'If she continues to dominate her films, she might very soon face a scarcity of co-stars. Heroes might be apprehensive about being paired with her,' said the 61-year-old who faced that situation when films featuring her in the central role co-starred Vinod Mehra or Marc Zuber.

In 'Kahaani', Vidya found the Bengali star Parambrata Chatterjee sportingly supporting her heroine-centric presence in the film. But would she run out of co-stars in her future efforts at hero-giri?

'Vidya should avoid the pitfall of only doing central parts. She should also enjoy doing peripheral parts as much as the pivotal ones. Being the centre of attention could be addictive. She must learn to also be part of a cinema that doesn't focus on her but has something important to say,' suggested Shabana.

Priyanka named India's Glam Diva

Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra has pipped stars like Vidya Balan, Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone for India's Glam Diva title.

The title was given as part of Big CBS Love's show 'India's Glam Diva'.

Priyanka was crowned by her fan Siddhi Singh, a Mumbai-based girl. The actress was named the winner on the basis of public voting.

On the finale episode, Priyanka will be seen sharing her ambitions and desires as an actress and a woman.

The actress has been successful with her movie choices and hasn't given the critics much to complain about. Right from her character in 'Andaaz', for which she won the Filmfare Award for best female debut in 2002 to 'Fashion' for which she recieved the National award for best actress, she has enthralled the audience in her a decade long career.

Jury member and choreographer Shiamak Davar said: 'She wants to be number one; she wants to conquer the world; she wants to make it not only in India but globally - which is great.'

Priyanka is now also utilising her melodius voice to launch a music album in the US.

Southern film industry can wait: Asin Thottumkal

New Delhi: Asin Thottumkal is in no mood to return to southern movies - at least, not right now. The actress is comfortable in Bollywood and says she is happy to see how technology and awareness have brought the two film industries closer than ever before.

'I am quite comfortable here (in Bollywood). I'm getting to know the style and the language in a better way now. I dub for my films on my own now as I am better with the language. So it's going great,' Asin told IANS in an interview.

Asin's next Hindi release is 'Housefull 2', releasing April 5.

'I am still in touch with my Tamil and Telugu film producers. They have been missing me. But I have done a lot of those films in the past. I don't think I am going to do a film soon there, but hopefully I will do something when I get a different project,' she said.

The 26-year-old was impressed with the 2011 Malayalam film 'Pranayam' and says she is glad to see the good content being churned out down south.

'One film I really liked was 'Pranayam'. I won't say that I felt like I should have been a part of it. But as a viewer, I really enjoyed it. It was a mature love story starring Mohanlal, and the performances were brilliant.

'The southern industry has always had a good mixture of stories. They have always worked on realistic stories, and I am glad the industry continues to do so,' she added.

Asin was already an established name down south before she decided to step into Bollywood in 2008 with 'Ghajini', a Hindi remake of her own Tamil film of the same name.

She made her B-Town debut opposite Aamir Khan and in her three years in the industry, she has already featured with actors like Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn. In 'Housefull 2', she will be seen with Akshay Kumar.

With a slew of southern film actors coming and working in Bollywood and vice versa, Asin says these are great times for both the industries.

'There has always been exchange of talent between both the worlds. Bollywood's female leads have worked in the south too. So it's not new. But technology and awareness have helped the worlds come closer and be a lot more talked about than ever before,' said Asin, who is confident Bollywood is headed towards better times for women.

'One cannot deny that there is a change. But I hope the women have stronger roles in the future. Cinema reflects society and that's perhaps the reason for changing times. However, one can always hope more writers concentrate on writing female-centric scripts,' she added.

For now, Asin is shuttling between the shooting of Rohit Shetty's 'Bol Bachchan' and the promotions of Sajid Khan's 'Housefull 2'.

Despite a cast of 12 actors, Asin says she had 'no apprehensions' about signing 'Housefull 2'.

'I knew what I was getting into and I am glad that I did,' she said confidently.

'3' gets U certificate, Dhanush happy

Mumbai: Southern star Dhanush is happy to know that his wife Aishwarya's directorial debut '3', in which he plays the male lead, has got an U-certificate from the censor board.

'Very happy to announce that '3' has been certified as 'U'. Will announce the release date day after. God bless,' the 28-year-old tweeted.

Dhanush, a known name in the Tamil movie industry, garnered overnight popularity globally when his song 'Kolaveri di' hit the YouTube.

Dhanush has teamed up with Shruti Haasan in the film.

'We are trying for a March end or April 1st week release for '3'. Will confirm soon,' he added.

Big B to host IPL 5 opening ceremony

New Delhi: Actor Amitabh Bachchan will host the opening ceremony of the fifth season of Indian Premier League (IPL) in Chennai April 3.

The 69-year-old, who has taken a break to recover from two abdominal surgeries last month, is preparing for the event.

'April 3rd is the day for the opening. Preparing for it already. Getting back into the grind,' tweeted the actor.

The actor, known for his deep, baritone voice, had hosted four seasons of game show 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' and also the third season of the reality show 'Bigg Boss'.

Now, Genelia D'Souza in legal trouble

An FIR has been filed against actor Genelia D'Souza, ordered by a Hyderabad court. A complaint was filed against the actor for being the brand ambassador of Anjaniputra Infrastructure Private Limited, a real estate firm in Hyderabad, which failed to construct a customer's duplex house at Maheswaram mandal on the outskirts of the city, reports Indian Express. The court is furious over the actor for making false promises in the advertisements and brochures of the firm. However, Genelia has denied these allegations saying that it was a one-off shoot done 6 years ago.The complaint has been filed against Genelia and five others in connection with a scam of around Rs 250 crore.

Sonam to play JNU girl opposite Dhanush in new film

Mumbai: Actress Sonam Kapoor has landed the role of a Varanasi girl, who studies in the capital's Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), in 'Raanjhanaa'. She is cast opposite southern star Dhanush.

The decision was taken after intense discussions between director Aanand L.Rai of 'Tanu Weds Manu' and Sonam.

As per the script, Dhanush plays a local Varanasi boy, and Sonam essays a Varanasi girl educated in Delhi.

Sonam will now spend time on the JNU campus to grasp the conduct and ideology of students there.

'The culture of education at the JNU is radically different from other universities in Delhi and across the country. At JNU students, both male and female, are very politically aware,' said a source from team of 'Raanjhanaa'.

'They talk intelligently on national issues. They dress sensibly, hang out at specific cafes in Delhi, attend seminars and protest actively on national issues. The director Aanand Kumar wanted Sonam to imbibe all of these traits. And they also speak fluent Hindi,' the source added.

When it comes to her spoken Hindi, Sonam, according to the source, needs to work as hard as Dhanush.

Dhanush is in Mumbai working on the dubbing of the Hindi version of his wife's film '3'. He has been working with a Hindi coach, trying to get the language right.

For Sonam too, it's been decided that her accented Hindi and the haute-couture look just won't do for the film.

However, Sonam does not really play the quintessential Varanasi girl. Her character is that of a local girl who has been to college in Delhi for three years, and returned to her home town as quite the sophisticated small-towner with an acquired metropolitan air, says a source close to the project.

At first the director was not sure if Sonam could carry off the role. But after meeting her, he was convinced.

'I am bowled over by her commitment to get the nuances of the role right. I've found my lady,' said Rai.

Jagathy being fed through tube

Kozhikode: Doctors treating actor Jagathy Sreekumar said that food is being fed through tube. Doctors said there was a major improvement in his health condition. Jagathy, who suffered injuries in his lungs, is now breathing on his own. The help of ventilator would be required only when needed. The drugs being given to sedate him was also stopped completely. All the other organs are working well. Actress Sarada and actor Nadirsha visited him on Friday.

Amala Paul signs up for `Boologam'

Actress Amala Paul has been signed for the next film Boologam along with Jayam Ravi in the lead.

Directed by newcomer N. Kalyanakrishnan Boologam revolves around the life of a kick-boxer adding a tinge of romance. It is also learnt that Jayam Ravi is currently being trained on Kick-boxing.

The movie will be produced by V Ravichandran of Aascar Films.

Jayam Ravi is currently shooting for Ameer's Aadhi Bhagawan and once it is done he will begin work on Boologam.

I will get married by the end of this year: Kareena Kapoor

New Delhi: Actress Kareena Kapoor, who is busy shooting for Madhur Bhandarkar's 'Heroine', says she will get married to beau Saif Ali Khan by the end of the year. Reports suggested that the Bollywood couple was planning to tie the knot after the release of Saif's home production 'Agent Vinod' this March but Kareena says they are in no rush. 'I will get married hopefully by the end of this year... because I am busy doing 'Heroine' and I have to finish the film first. We are not yet going to announce the date. We are in no such rush but it will happen this year,' said Kareena, who was in the Capital to attend the India Today Conclave.

The 31-year-old, who has been dating Saif since 2007, says she does not consider herself as a 'star' but just 'a
simple girl in love'. 'I am actually just a simple girl in love whose dreams have come true. Ever since I was 9 I would see Karisma (sister) rehearse and I would go backstage and repeat the same things. I always wanted to act and I know nothing
other than acting. I have no degree and so I hope to act forever,' she said.

Kareena has done a variety of role in her career spanning over a decade. She has given hits like 'Jab We Met', '3 Idiots', 'Omkara', 'Bodyguard' and 'Ra.One'.Talking about her film 'Heroine', Kareena said, 'It's turning out pretty well... It's an exciting journey of an actress, she is slightly schizophrenic and she has got these different mood swings it's very difficult for me to do...But Iam glad there is a role like this. It is fun not to stand behind Shahrukh and Salman in a movie but prove yourself as an actor.'

The actress, who comes from a filmy background, says things have changed a lot in Bollywood except the fact that male actors are still paid more than their female counterparts.'How much ever things change in Bollywood, male actors have always been paid more than females... when it comes to numbers I am no where close to any of the Khans. So for me it's not about replacing the men in our industry but doing the best I can. 'There are a lot of women-centric roles that I am being offered and not just being an eye candy in the film. I think Vidya Balan's 'Dirty Picture' has changed the entire game,' Kareena said.And ask her if she would have taken up 'Dirty Picture' if she was offered, she says, 'I don't know if I would have taken the risk but even if I did I would have balanced it out by making sure there is a Salman or Shahrukh in the film so that even if the film flops there is some thing that will balance it.'

Kareena says though good scripts work, it is still the star power that rules the industry. 'There are a lot of director who come to me with brilliant scripts but don't have the money to finance it. But our industry sadly doesn't run only on good scripts, 'Bodyguard' wasn't one of the best scripts but it earned so much be ause of Salman in it,' Kareena said.

Shankar loves to see audiences enjoy his music

Mumbai: Music composer Shankar Mahadevan, set for a four-city tour with partners Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa, says the best reward for musicians is watching audiences grooving and clapping to their tunes.

'It's nice to be a music director, a musician and a performer. It becomes multi-tasking things. It's amazing to see people's love. It's a first hand experience,' the 45-year-old said while announcing his tour.

'We know whenever our song becomes a hit and people are liking it. But when you actually see them (audiences) dancing and singing and clapping in front of you, that feeling cannot be replaced by anything else.'

The tour stars March 18 in Bangalore. They will travel to Kolkata March 20, Mumbai March 25 and Delhi April 1.

Shankar says it would not be possible to perform on each of their best songs, but they would try to entertain the audience in the limited time.

'We are never able to perform the repertoire of our songs in a show, but we try to entertain people as much as we can. We will perform the maximum in the given time so that crowd would have something to remember the rest of their lives,' said Shankar.

The trio came together in 1985 with a non-film music album. In 1997 they debuted in the film industry with 'Dus'.

After that they composed for Farhan Akhtar's directorial debut 'Dil Chahta Hai' and it proved to be the turning point in their career.

The 2003 film 'Kal Ho Naa Ho' fetched them the National Award for best composers

Aamir Khan Wednesday apologised to his fans for the delay in the release of his much-awaited thriller 'Talaash' and said the film would now come out in December because he was focusing on his debut TV show right now.

Aamir, who turned 47 Wednesday, is hosting and producing a show bringing real life stories on the small screen for Star Plus.

'Right now my life revolves around the show. My team and me are trying to do something different. I have been working on this show for last two years. This is my life's ambitious project,' Aamir said.

'I am very excited about my television debut. Usually today's day (birthday) I usually spend with my family, but today I will be leaving for the shooting of my television show,' he added.

Talking about 'Talaash', he said: ''Talaash' is very close to my heart. Earlier, we were trying to release it in January. Then we announced it for June. Now, the date has been pushed to either Nov 30 or Dec 7. I am sorry for this, I know my fans are waiting for 'Talaash',' the actor told reporters on the sidelines of his birthday celebrations.

Written and directed by Reema Kagti, 'Talaash' is said to be a psychological thriller and Aamir is co-producing it with Excel Entertainment. Rani Mukerji and Kareena Kapoor are playing female leads in it.

Disclosing further details behind the delay, he added: 'Reason behind this is the show I was doing. The set caught fire and the entire set was destroyed. So, the show got delayed a bit. So, I am focusing on the show, which is impacting the release date of 'Talaash'.

'Both are very close to me. I can't give justice to both at the same time. So, I discussed with Reema and we decided to push the release date of the film.'

Beti B's name revealed-Aaradhya Bachan

Though the Bachchan family hasn't announced it officially, Beti B's name has been leaked by the media. The name of Aishwarya-Abhishek's adorable daughter is Aaradhya Bachchan, reports a daily. Abhishek Bachchan had recently confirmed in a press conference that they have zeroed in on a name for their daughter.

'We've got a name, and I'll announce it very soon, but in terms of releasing a photograph you know I... if people see her in everyday life that's fine by me, but I just think releasing the photograph is a very pompous thing to do. We don't believe in any ceremony in terms of naamkaran,' Abhishek had said.Names like Aaliya and Abhilasha were doing the rounds in media before.We wonder if Amitabh or Abhishek will officially announce it on Twitter.

Aamir Khan turns 47 on Wednesday

Mumbai: Bollywood's 'Mr Perfectionist' actor Aamir Khan, who turns 47 today, is busy shooting for his debut television reality show on his birthday. Aamir would make his debut on the small screen with a reality show, to be aired on Star Plus in two months' time. 'I am shooting for the TV show today. Unfortunately, I won't be able to celebrate it with the family. Usually, I makesure I am with my family today. But I am very much excited about the show,' Aamir told reporters here. 'The team of Star TV and all of us are trying to do something different. We are working on the show since two years. This is an ambitious project,' he said. Reportedly, the show is titled, 'Satyamev Jayate'. 'The show would go on air soon, say in two months or so. It would be spread across 13 weeks. We have traveled across the country for the show by various modes of transport, including train,' he said.

Aamir is overwhelmed with the wishes and love from his fans. 'Birthday comes every year, I feel everyday must be of the same importance. I thank god for the success, love and respect. On a personal front, I am happy for the new member in our family, our son, Azad,' Aamir said. 'I will try to spend more and more time with my family. Amma offers to foot Jagathy's hospital bills

Kozhikode : The Association of Malayam Movie Artistes (AMMA) today offered to pay medical bills of veteran stage and cine actor Jagathy, undergoing treatment in a private hospital here.

Talking to reporters after visting the hospital where the comedian was undergoing treatment for multiple injuries, its President Innocent said the organisation would meet the expenditure incurred in connection with the treatment if the actor so desired.

Popular Actor Vijayaraghavan was among others who visited the hospital today.

Jagathy, who underwent an emergency surgery to stop internal bleeding, is undergoing further operations for multiple injuries at the private sector Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences.

Doctors attending on him said his condition was satisfactory.

The actor was proceeding to the sets of 'Edavappathy,' a Malayalam film by renowned Director Lenin Rajendran at Madikeri in Karnataka when the car in which he was travelling hit a road divider at Panambra in Malappuram District on March 10 injuring him and his driver seriously.

The driver was also undergoing treatment at the hospital. (UNI)

Mamooty visits Jagathy

Kozhikode: Actor Mammooty paid a visit to Jagathy Sreekumar, who is under treatment after an accident, in MIMS hospital here on Monday evening. He came from Ernakulam after his shooting for the film King and Commissioner. Police had to use pepper spray to clear the crowd in the hospital which had assembled to have a glimpse of the actor.

Mammootty met Jagathy's children and asked the doctors and nurse to give back their favorite actor in full health. Producer Anto Joseph also accompanied Mammooty. Director VM Vinu and scriptwriter T A Rasak were also there. Actors Sidhiq, Kalabhavan Mani, Sai Kumar, Bindu Panicker, minister A P Anil Kumar and K Sudhakaran MP visited the actor.

Asif Ai in Mohanan's next film

After Kathaparayumbol, Maanikakal, director M Mohanan's next venture would star Asif Ali, Anoop Menon, Mukesh among others. Direction and screenplay would be by M Mohanan, cinematography P Sukumar, lyrics Anil Panachuran, Rafeeq Ahmed, music M Jayachandran. The movie to be produced by Vijayakumar under Aishwarya Sneha Movies, would commence shooting in Kozhikode on June 1.

Aishwarya happy playing mom: Abhishek

Actor Abhishek Bachchan says his wife Aishwarya Rai is happy playing mother to their three-and-half-month-old daughter and would return to work when she feels like doing so. Meanwhile the actor is keen to work in films inspired by plays by young writers.

'As and when she wants to come back, is completely her decision... as and when she decides, when she sees a script she is inspired by - the decision is entirely hers. Currently she is very happy doing what she is doing,' the 36-year-old said here at the launch of Sorabh Pant's book 'The Wednesday Soul'.

While most filmmakers may opt for novels to base their films on, Abhishek favours plays penned by young writers.

'I like to read biographies and autobiographies. But there are some wonderful plays out there that a lot of young, Indian talent is writing. I would love to do one of them,' said Abhishek.

'I can't decide which one. Like I said, there is a lot of interesting material being written in India, I would love to delve into that resource to come up with a film,' he added.

The Bachchan family is yet to announce the name of Beti B.

Abhishek is currently busy working on 'Bol Bachchan' and 'Chakravyuha'. His two sequels - 'Dostana 2' and 'Dhoom 3' will go on floors soon.

Over 10 projects hit due to Jagathy's accident

Thrissur:The unexpected accident that caused severe injuries to actor Jagathy Sreekumar will affect as many as 10 film projects. Jagathy had already completed films to be released for Vishu namely Mohanlal starrer `Grandmaster' and `Cobra' starring Mamootty and Lal.

Jagathy also completed dubbing of `Ezham Suryan' directed by Jhanaseelan starring Unni Mukundan. Jagathy has important roles in films like `Thiruvambadi Thampan' directed by M Padmakumar, `Parudeesa' starring Sreenivasan, `Reporter' directed by Venu Gopan, `Edvappathi' directed by Lenin Rajendran, `Diamond Necklace' from Lal Jose. for which shooting had already begun. He had given call sheets to 21 films, including Mohanlal Renjith teams Spirit, Shaji Kailas Prithviraj film Naduvazhikal 11, Thamarassery to Thailand by Saji Surendran, Masters from Johny Antony and Street Light and Akasmikam.

On the day of accident, he was on his way to join the shooting of Lenin Rajendran's film in Kodagu.

Jagathy Sreekumar’s health improves

Kozhikode: The condition of veteran actor Jagathy Sreekumar, grievously injured in a road accident Saturday, has shown slight improvement though he continues to be on ventilator, doctors attending on him said Sunday.

According to the bulletin, Jagathy's blood pressure was normal and despite the serious injuries, the functioning of his vital organs made a slight improvement.

He will remain on the ventilator, the statement added.

Jagathy was seriously hurt in a road accident in the wee hours of Saturday. A surgery was done on the actor's stomach to stop internal bleeding.

According to doctors, since he suffered multiple injuries, more surgical interventions will be needed.

"He requires a few more surgeries as he has got multiple injuries. The team of doctors will decide about the other surgeries," said a doctor.

Hearing news of the accident, numerous film personalities arrived Saturday to find out about Jagathy's condition.

Jagathy, 62, has acted in more than 1,000 Malayalam films.

The accident occurred near the Kozhikode University campus around 4.30 a.m. Saturday when the Innova car carrying him hit a divider. The driver of the car escaped with minor injuries.

Jagathy was on his way from Thrissur to Coorg in Karnataka to join the location of director Lenin Rajendran's latest film.

Due to the accident, more than a dozen films in Malayalam which are under various stages of production will be affected.

`Josettante Hero' on March 16

`Josettante Hero', under the banner of Desam Movies, starring Anoop Menon in the lead role and directed by K K Haridass will hit the floors on March 16.

Asokan, Suraj, Bheeman Raghu, Sivaji Guruvayoor, Sudheesh, Zeenath, Kripa and Dimple Rose are in the supporting roles of Josettante Hero. Music by Saajan K Ram, Senthil Raj is handling the camera work for the film.

Ansar Kalabhavan and Sathyan Kolangad have penned the screen play. The film is the story of a film producer and Sajan K Ram has tuned the music for Rafeeq Ahammed's lyrics.

Rash driving: John Abraham granted bail

The Bombay High Court has granted bail to John Abraham , in a 2006 case of rash and negligent driving, on a surety of Rs 20,000.

John had been taken into police custody earlier today after a Sessions Court in Mumbai dismissed his plea challenging the 15-day simple imprisonment awarded to him by a lower court.

Upholding John's conviction, Sessions Judge N V Navkhar ordered his detention following which he was taken into police custody. The judge also rejected John's plea seeking time to surrender before the trial court.

The 39-year-old actor had reached the court around 11 am for the hearing on his plea.

Wearing a blue checked shirt and blue denims, John looked visibly tensed, as he chatted with his lawyer. However, he signed a couple of autographs when some constables and court clerks approached him.

John later moved the Bombay High Court against the Sessions Court order and sought bail, which was granted to him.

On October 14, 2010, the Metropolitan Magistrate Court at Bandra convicted John for the rash driving incident in which two persons were injured, and sentenced him to a 15-day jail term. He was granted bail the same day.
A fortnight later, the model-actor filed an appeal in the Sessions Court against the conviction. His appeal stated that 'judge has misconstrued and has, without applying the principles relating to the acts of rashness and criminal negligence, convicted the applicant (John)'.
The incident dates back to April 8, 2006, when Abraham allegedly rammed his Yamaha Hayabusa bike into a bicycle, injuring two youngsters -- Shyam Kasbe (22) and Tanmay Majhi (19) -- on Carter Road in suburban Bandra.

The police later booked him under IPC Sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others).
According to John's application, even the victims 'had not made out a case of either criminal negligence or rashness' against him.
'The lower court has relied upon hearsay evidence in convicting the appellant (John),' the appeal had said.
John's lawyer Harshad Ponda has requested the court to give them some time before the surrender/arrest.

Mumbai: Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor, who is known for her wonderful styling, however can't resist herself when it comes to food. She claims her life revolves around food.

'My whole life revolves around food. While having breakfast I think what I should have for lunch while having lunch I think what I should eat for dinner,' Sonam told IANS during the unveiling of 'Wassup! Andheri', a three-day art and entertainment festival in the Andheri suburb.

This glamorous actress, who belongs to a Punjabi family, loves feeding people. She said: 'I am a Punjabi and the whole point is I love feeding people and I love getting fed.'

Sonam had to lose oodles of weight before she starred in Sanjay Leela Bhansli's 'Saawariyan'.

She is, however, giving a tough time to her dietitian.

'My dietitian has been working on me for quite some time and she has been unsuccessful,' the 26-year-old said.

Actor Jagathy Sreekumar seriously injured in road mishap

Kozhikode :Actor Jagathy Sreekumar, a veteran of over 1,000 Malayalam films, was seriously hurt in a road accident in the wee hours of Saturday and has been admitted to a private hospital here, police said.

Speaking to reporters, Venugopal, chief of the 10 member panel of doctors treating the ace comedian, said he suffered multiple injuries.

'He has injuries in the neck, chest, abdomen and and if necessary he will have to undergo a surgery. He has been put on ventilator,' said Venugopal.

Jagathy, 62, has acted in more than 1,000 Malayalam films.



The accident occurred near the Kozhikode University campus around 4.30 a.m, when the Innova car carrying him hit a divider, police said. The driver of the car escaped with minor injuries, while the actor was badly hurt, police said.

Jagathy was on his way from Thrissur to Coorg in Karnataka to join the location of director Lenin Rajendran's latest film.

With the accident, more than a dozen films in Malayalam which are under various stages of production will be affected.

This is a great time to be a movie buff. Within a week of 'Paan Singh Tomar', which should incontestably win Irrfan Khan the National Award for best actor, comes 'Kahaani' in which Vidya Balan is so flawlessly resplendent that one suspects the next year's National Award too is already reserved for her. Dirty deeds forgotten.

Playing Vidya Bagchi, a non-resident Indian (NRI) who lands in Kolkata heavily pregnant and immeasurably distressed by the disappearance of her husband, Vidya Balan doesn't hit a single false note in the entire graph of her character's fascinating journey.

'Kahaani' is not an ordinary thrill-a-minute film about a search for a missing person. It's a lot more. Bringing a virgin vitality to the suspense drama, the film strikes a captivating balance between realism in art and the art of courting realism, without losing the entertainment quotient.

From the moment Vidya lands in Kolkata, the colour, vibrancy, bustle and jostle that are peculiar to Kolkata assail your senses. It's a claustrophobic yet liberating world of intrigue and deception. A pungent flavour of anxiety and stress qualify the narration from frame one.

Sujoy Ghosh, whose earlier films gave us no clue of the ingenuity that he displays here with such ostensible casualness, cuts the footage with razor sharp economy, leaving no sign of the surgery involved in leaving behind scenes and putting together a tale that pays homage to Hitchcock even while it tilts its topi to the detective films of Satyajit Ray.

The complexities of metropolitan life emerge in a kind of bridled flurry. Within a few minutes of Vidya's landing in Kolkata we know her search for her missing husband is not going to be a cake-walk. Yes, we will see this spirited woman's pursuit of the truth to the end.

Ghosh crafts a tale of devious dynamics that do not make a song and dance of their cloak-and-dagger intentions. The narrative doesn't whip up a lather of anxieties. Stock devices of the suspense genre are here thrown meaningfully into the Hooghly. The relevance and resonance of Vidya's journey into the dark unrevealed bowel of India's secret service emerge in illuminating details created in Vidya's character which add up finally to a jigsaw where not a single piece is out of place.

The end-game, shot in an exquisite eruption of Durga Puja's compelling colours, is so unexpected, it is bound to leave even the most diehard cynics with a sense of satiated suspense.

Indeed so clever is the writing and so stunning yet convincing the denouement that one was persuaded into wondering whether Sujoy Ghosh filched the material from some unidentifiable source.

While it would be criminal to give away any of the plot details it would be in the scope of permissible praise to say the writing is clearly not meant to strew red herrings in our way. As we go back to the film, at the end we see every detail, every twist and turn in the plot was meant to be a coherent pointer to the complete picture.

Ghosh's masterful story-telling leaves no room to doubt the existence of a rather unforgiving God who charts a seemingly cruel destiny for the unsuspecting individual.

Vidya's portrayal of grace under pressure is so measured and skilled, one at times wonders if she was actually watching herself perform from a distance to make sure she didn't take her character's distress into the kingdom of melodrama.

Vidya Balan has splendid support from actors who merge into the Kolkatan conundrum with the seamless inevitability of people who accept extraordinary circumstances as part of life's ordinary patterns.

Impressive in his own right is Parambrata Chattopadhyay as Vidya's pillar of support from within an establishment that insists on throwing her off the track.

Parambrata plays his gentle character with such tender affection that you begin to believe goodness is not an extinct commodity.

Nawazuddin Sidiqqui, that brilliant actor from Kabir Khan's 'New York' and last week's 'Paan Singh Tomar', brings a steely-sharp ruthlessness to his investigative officer's role.

In one of Vidya's best sequences where she quietly tells him to keep his menacing advice to himself, Nawazuddin steps back to let the lady have her moment of glory, unhampered.

Vidya Balan takes centrestage with great skill and restrained pride. Her laughter of joy when she bonds with the chai-wallah kid (Ritobroto Mukherjee) and her final breakdown sequence bring her close to the cathartic emotions that Shabana Azmi displays.

Vidya displays a rare understanding of her character's exacerbated emotional and physical state. Luckily for her, her co-actors display no outward or inward signs of insecurity in playing roles that are designed to be supremely supportive.

Veteran Bengali actors unknown to Bollywood, such as Saswata Mukherjee as a hired assassin and Kharaj Mukherjee as a kindly podgy cop, fill up the edges of the comprehensive lucid portrait of a woman with a mission, without crowding the canvas.

'Kahaani' is one of those rare films that can easily lay claim to being a game-changer. And yet the narrative makes no claims. The destiny of the protagonist is charted in a breathless sweep of urgently persuasive episodes that tumble out as though God wrote Vidya Bagchi's screenplay.

Enthralling, absorbing and engaging the narrative never resorts to italicized emotions to get our attention. We are hooked unconditionally from scene one. We surrender to Vidya's journey. She gives us no choice.

Malayalam films fail to impress at National Awards; Malayalees do

Thiruvananthapuram: Malayalam films drew a virtual blank at the 59th National Film Awards annoucned Wednesday in the capital, but Malayalees Vidya Balan, K.B. Suveeran and Mallika saved the grace for the industry.

Vidya, who belongs to Tamil speaking Palakkad Iyer family, walked away with the best actress award for her role in 'The Dirty Picture', while Malayalam director Suveeran's 'Byari', the first ever film in the Beary language, shared the best film award with Marathi movie 'Deool' and actress Mallika won a special mention for her role in 'Byari'.

Debutant film director Sherry's 'Adimadhyantham' got a special mention at the awards.

'Byari' stars Malayalam actor Mamukoya with Mallika playing Nadira whose life ends in misery after being forcefully married off at the age of 13.

'I am really delighted that my film has won this award and for many years I was trying to do a Malayalam film but it never happened and had to run away to neighbouring place to do this film,' said Suveeran, a theatre and drama personality.

'Even though drama is my background, cinema has a language of its own whereas drama is self expressive. Now I have two offers from the Malayalam film industry,' added Suveeran who said that he has been one who likes to compete in his field,' he added.

Mallika, who made her debut with Adoor Gopalakrishnan's 'Nizhalkuthu' in 2002 and was known as Reeja Venugopal, is happy after winning for her performance, which she described as a tough role.

'It was a very tough role for me and now I am so thankful to all who helped me get this. I knew when I took the role, it would be one film which would be remembered by all because it was the first ever film in Beary language,' said Mallika.

'Adimadhyantham', about a deaf Vedan boy from northern Kerala, made news when Sherry openly took on film star turned Kerala Cinema Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar for rejecting his film for the competition section at the 16th edition of the International Film festival of Kerala.

'This is a fitting reply to the Minister Ganesh Kumar who played truant with my film when it was first selected to the IFFK and later removed. I am happy,' said Sherry.

Incidentally, at the last edition of National awards, comedy and character actor Salim Kumar won the best actor award and this year according to jury member K.P. Kumaran, veteran superstar Mohanlal was considered for the best actor award but was edged out because his role in the film 'Pranayam ' was not the main character.

I want to believe it, says Vidya on first National Award

New Delhi: Actress Vidya Balan, who was declared the best actress for playing a sex symbol in 'The Dirty Picture' at the 59th National Awards Wednesday, said she is still trying to believe that she has won the prestigious trophy.

'I want to believe it..long cherished dream has come true.... my first...I don't know what to say....I want to thank director Milan Luthira for giving me this film. This is really unbelievable...It is the biggest honour of the ocuntry...it is very speical...every award is special,' Vidya, 33, told CNN-IBN after winning the award.

Bollywood star Vidya Balan won the National award for the best actress for her performance of a
Southern sex siren in 'The Dirty Picture' at the 59th national awards, announced today.

The best feature film award was shared by 'Byari' directed by Suveeran and Marathi film 'Deool', which also won its actor Girish Kulkarni the best actor award.

Onir directed 'I Am', a compilation of four stories on identity, won the best Hindi feature film.

The winners of the prestigious 59th National Film Awards were announced by chairpersons of the jury today. The awards
will be given to the winners in a ceremony on May 3.

For feature films the names of the award winners were declared by Rohini Hattangady, who was the chairperson of the
Feature Films Jury (Central Panel).

Ramesh Sharma, the chairperson of the Non-Feature films jury and Vijaya Mulay, who chaired the jury on the Best
Writing on Cinema announced the names of other award winners.

The best Malayalam film is Director Renjith Balakrishnan `Indian Rupee'. The malayalam movie `Aadimadhyantham' directed by Sherry got a special mention by the jury.

Shah Rukh Khan's superhero film 'RA.One' was named for best special effects and Harry Hingorani and Keitan Yadav won the award for their work in 'RA.One'.

The best entertainment movie was bagged by Azhagarswamiyin Kuthirai, the Tamil movie.

The best child actist award was bagged by Parthav Gupta in Stanley Ka Dabba.

Baburaj as professor

Baburaj would be acting as a professor in the film, 'Naughty Professor'. The movie to be directed by Harinarayanan, will cast Baburaj in the title role as a quirky professor who always get into trouble. Baburaj himself has penned the script and screenplay. .
