'Beautiful' a beautiful malayalam movie
Malayalam filmmakers cinema has always been known for the sensitive handling of topics. Malayalam filmmakers have always been brave enough to touch topics with high emotional content. The audience also have been mature enough to respond positively to films with strong themes. Beautiful, directed by VK Prakash is one such endeavour. The film stars Jayasurya, Anoop Menon and Meghna Raj essay pivotal roles in the film.
Beautiful bares resemblance to Bollywood filmGuzaarish, starring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai. The film also seems to be inspired from Hollywood flicks The Seas Inside and The diving bell& The butterfly. However, you cannot call it a copy as it retains its' strong Malayali flavour.
There is a particular scene in Beautiful where Jayasurya's maid (Thesni Khan) tells him why one of his acquaintances is angry with her. She tells him that the guy forces her to have sex with him, but she refuses to oblige. When Jayasurya asks why, she replies in a calm and composed manner, “Nothing. I was not in the mood then." This shows Malayalam films willingness to touch and explore taboo subjects.
Though script by Anoop Menon is imaginative, it could have had a more strong storyline. However, we need to appreciate director VK Prakash for his excellent narrative. Music by Ratheesh Vegha is average.
Camera work by Jomon T John is outstanding, and so is the crisp editing by Mahesh Narayanan. VK Prakash has managed to extract some wonderful performances from the star cast. The narrative ofBeautiful slows down a bit in the second half. However, some nice twists in the script keeps the audiences interest intact

അന്ന് കോളിളക്കത്തിന്റെ ക്ലൈമാക്സില് സംഭവിച്ചതെന്ത്?
മലയാളത്തിന്റെ ആദ്യ സൂപ്പര്താരമെന്ന വിശേഷണത്തിന് അര്ഹനായ ജയന് എങ്ങനെയാണ് മരിച്ചത്? ജയന് അസ്തമിച്ച് 31 വര്ഷം കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടും പലവിധ ആരോപണങ്ങളും വിവാദങ്ങളും ഉള്ളില് ഉറങ്ങിക്കിടക്കുന്ന ഒരു ചോദ്യമാണിത്. ജയന്റെ മരണം സംബന്ധിച്ച് ഒട്ടേറെ വിവാദങ്ങള് ഉയര്ന്നിരുന്നു. പല പ്രമുഖ നടന്മാര്ക്കും ആ സംഭവത്തിന്റെ പേരില് ആരോപണങ്ങളുടെ കൂരമ്പുകളേറ്റു.

യഥാര്ത്ഥത്തില് ജയന്റെ മരണം ഒരു അപകടം തന്നെയായിരുന്നു. 1980 നവംബര് 16 ഞായറാഴ്ച. മദ്രാസിലെ ഷോളവാരം. കോളിളക്കം എന്ന സിനിമയുടെ ക്ലൈമാക്സ് രംഗങ്ങളാണ് ചിത്രീകരിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നത്. ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ ക്ലൈമാക്സില് ഹെലികോപ്ടര് ഫൈറ്റ് വേണമെന്ന് ജയന് തന്നെയാണ് നിര്ബന്ധം പിടിച്ചത്. റബ്ബര് തോട്ടങ്ങളില് മരുന്ന് തളിക്കുന്നതിനായി ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്ന ചെറിയ ഒരു ഹെലികോപ്ടറാണ് ചിത്രീകരണത്തിനായി കൊണ്ടുവന്നത്.

അന്ന് രാവിലെ മുതല് കനത്ത മഴയായിരുന്നു. പല തവണ ഷൂട്ടിംഗ് നിര്ത്തിവയ്ക്കേണ്ടിവന്നു. ഉച്ചയ്ക്ക് മുമ്പ് ഷൂട്ടിംഗ് തീരുമെന്ന് കരുതിയിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ട് ആവശ്യത്തിന് ഭക്ഷണ സാധനങ്ങള് പോലും കരുതിയിരുന്നില്ല. വിശന്നുപൊരിഞ്ഞാണ് ജയന്റെ നില്പ്പ്.

മഴമാറി അല്പ്പം വെയില് തെളിഞ്ഞപ്പോള് ഹെലികോപ്ടര് രംഗം ചിത്രീകരിക്കാന് തീരുമാനിച്ചു. രംഗം ഇതാണ് - വില്ലനായ ബാലന് കെ നായര് ഹെലികോപ്ടറില് കയറി രക്ഷപ്പെടുന്നു. അത് തടയാനായി സുകുമാരന് ഓടിക്കുന്ന ബൈക്കിന് പിന്നില് എഴുന്നേറ്റുനിന്ന് ഹെലികോപ്ടറിന്റെ ലാന്ഡിംഗ് പാഡില് തൂങ്ങി ജയനും ഹെലികോപ്ടറില് കയറണം. അതിന് ശേഷം ബാലന് കെ നായരും ജയനുമായി ഹെലികോപ്ടറില് ഫൈറ്റ്.

ഹെലികോപ്ടര് രംഗമായതിനാല് റിഹേഴ്സല് കാര്യമായി ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല. ബാലന് കെ നായരുമായി പറന്നുയര്ന്ന ഹെലികോപ്ടര് ലക്ഷ്യമാക്കി സുകുമാരനും ജയനും ബൈക്കില് കുതിച്ചുപാഞ്ഞു. ബൈക്കിനുപിന്നില് എഴുന്നേറ്റുനിന്ന് ഹെലികോപ്ടറിന്റെ ലാന്ഡിംഗ് പാഡില് പിടിക്കാന് ജയന് ശ്രമിച്ചപ്പോള് ബാലന്സ് തെറ്റി.

വീണ്ടും ബാലന്സ് ചെയ്തുനിന്ന് ഹെലികോപ്ടറില് കയറാന് ശ്രമിച്ചു. അപ്പോള് ജയന് കയറാന് വേണ്ടി സൌകര്യമൊരുക്കാന് പൈലറ്റ് സമ്പത്ത് ഹെലികോപ്ടര് അല്പ്പം താഴ്ത്തി. മുകളില് കയറിയ ജയന്, ബാലന് കെ നായരുമായി ഫൈറ്റ് തുടങ്ങി. ബാലന് കെ നായരെ അടിച്ചുവീഴ്ത്തിയ ശേഷം ജയന് താഴേക്കുചാടി.

സംവിധായകന് പി എന് സുന്ദരം കട്ട് പറഞ്ഞു. രംഗം OK. ക്ലൈമാക്സ് രംഗം ഭംഗിയായി പൂര്ത്തിയായി. ഇനിയാണ് വിധിയുടെ കളി വരുന്നത്. തനിക്ക് കയറാന് വേണ്ടി ഹെലികോപ്ടര് പൈലറ്റ് അല്പ്പം താഴ്ത്തിക്കൊടുക്കുന്നത് പ്രേക്ഷകര് തിരിച്ചറിയുമെന്നായിരുന്നു ജയന്റെ അഭിപ്രായം. ഒരു നിര്ദ്ദേശം ജയന് മുന്നോട്ടുവച്ചു - 'ഈ രംഗം വീണ്ടും ചിത്രീകരിക്കാം'.

Rahman gets lifetime achievement award at DIFF
Indian music maestro A R Rahman has been honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 8th Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) here. The Oscar-winner is the youngest and the first musician to get the honour, which was presented to him last night by his highness Sheikh Majid Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the chairman of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority.
Previous recipients of the honour are Morgan Freeman, Sean Penn, Oliver Stone, Danny Glover, Terry Gilliam, Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Yash Chopra and Subhash Ghai. Rahman's soulful compositions blend the intricacies of Western and Indian classical with folk sounds, Qawwali and symphonic orchestral themes. The 45-year-old composer, who has made a distinct print in Indian and world cinema music, said he is a sort of multicultural person, having been exposed to both the Indian and Western culture through his music. "A R Rahman is an inspiration for countless musicians and composers, and has brought a fresh infusion of talent to the Indian film industry. Through his international foray, working with some of the world's most accomplished musicians, he demonstrated the power of music to cross all barriers and connect with a global audience," said festival chairman Abdulhamid Juma. "We are honoured to present Rahman with the DIFF Lifetime Achievement Award." Rahman will also kick off his world tour with a concert in Dubai on December 9; the concert is supported by the Festival.
Winner of two Academy Awards and two Grammys, Rahman is among the youngest recipients of DIFF's Lifetime Achievement Award, which singles out cinema and industry legends from Arab cinema, Asia and Africa, Europe, the Americas and Australasia. His work for 'Slumdog' Millionaire, which was screened at DIFF 2008, won two Academy Awards for Best Original Music Score and Best Original Song. Most recently, he joined forces with Rolling Stones legend Mick Jagger on 'SuperHeavy', a supergroup also featuring Joss Stone, Dave Stewart and Damian Marley. He also composed music for the Mandarin film, 'Warriors of Heaven & Earth'. Other international film credits include '127 Hours', 'Elizabeth: The Golden Age' with Craig Armstrong and 'Couples Retreat'.

Rahman's soulful compositions blend the intricacies of Western and Indian classical with folk sounds, Qawwali and symphonic orchestral themes. The 45-year-old composer, who has made a distinct print in Indian and world cinema music, said he is a sort of multicultural person, having been exposed to both the Indian and Western culture through his music. "A R Rahman is an inspiration for countless musicians and composers, and has brought a fresh infusion of talent to the Indian film industry. Through his international foray, working with some of the world's most accomplished musicians, he demonstrated the power of music to cross all barriers and connect with a global audience," said festival chairman Abdulhamid Juma. "We are honoured to present Rahman with the DIFF Lifetime Achievement Award." Rahman will also kick off his world tour with a concert in Dubai on December 9; the concert is supported by the Festival.
Winner of two Academy Awards and two Grammys, Rahman is among the youngest recipients of DIFF's Lifetime Achievement Award, which singles out cinema and industry legends from Arab cinema, Asia and Africa, Europe, the Americas and Australasia. His work for 'Slumdog' Millionaire, which was screened at DIFF 2008, won two Academy Awards for Best Original Music Score and Best Original Song. Most recently, he joined forces with Rolling Stones legend Mick Jagger on 'SuperHeavy', a supergroup also featuring Joss Stone, Dave Stewart and Damian Marley. He also composed music for the Mandarin film, 'Warriors of Heaven & Earth'. Other international film credits include '127 Hours', 'Elizabeth: The Golden Age' with Craig Armstrong and 'Couples Retreat'.
20 feared dead as fire engulfs private hospital in Kolkata
Kolkata: At least 20 patients were feared to have suffocated to death after a devastating fire swept through a seven storied annexe building of a private hospital at Dhakuria here today.
'Twenty patients are feared to have suffocated to death in the fire at the AMRI Hospital,' West Bengal Urban Development
Minister Firhad Hakim said.
Some bodies were found in departments that firemen were able to access, he said.
Initial reports had said that 40 patients were trapped inside the building, but Hakim said he was unable to give the
exact figure now as none of the hospital authorities could be contacted.
The fire which was suspected to have originated in the electrical department in the basement of the centrally
air-conditioned building swiftly spread, with the third floor and above being affected the most, fire brigade sources said.
The fire brigade despatched 25 fire engines, which took time to reach the smoke-engulfed building because of narrow
approach roads, Hakim said.
Firemen using ladders smashed window panes in the facade to rescue patients trapped inside the ICU, ICCU, ITU and
Critical Care units.
Fire Services Minister Javed Khan said the fire spread because of stocks of highly combustible material and it was
still not under control.
The hospital also did not have proper fire-fighting equipment, he said.
Fire brigade sources said that firemen were trying to locate oxygen cylinders stocked on the floors, as the fire
could make them explode.
Thick smoke was hindering the operations, they said.Commissioner of Kolkata Police R K Pachnanda too rushed to
the spot and panicked families of patients thronged the premises. Personnel of the Disaster Management Group reached
the scene and were assisting in the operations. PTI

Delhi Metro awarded for clean system
The Delhi Metro and the Delhi Integrated Multimodal Transport System (DIMTS) were honoured by the urban development ministry at an event here Tuesday.
The awards were given by Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath at the Urban Mobility India (UMI) conference-cum-exhibition here for best projects to organisations from across the country.
The Delhi Metro was awarded the best clean development mechanism and received a cheque of Rs.5 lakh.
'We are very proud of our Metro...the Phase III of the Delhi Metro is the largest urban infrastructure project ever undertaken in the country. On completion by March 2016, it will be carrying 40 lakh passengers per day,' Nath told reporters.
The second organisation from the capital to bag an award was the DIMTS for the best public-private partnership initiative in urban transport for the corporatisation of private stage carriage buses in Delhi.
It received a cheque of Rs.2.5 lakh.
The DIMTS, which runs the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, is a joint venture company set up with equal equity of the Delhi government and Infrastructure Development Finance Company (IDFC).
